Deceptive Exchange Rates: How to Avoid Being Overcharged When Withdrawing Cash
Dear Sir or Madam, I withdrew 4,000 CZK in cash from your cash machine in Prague, Dlouha 34, on Wednesday, 20th May. The exchange rate to the EUR varied between 27,2712 and 27,3949 on that day. However, you charged a fantasy rate of 24,90 which made up for a difference of 14,28 EUR in your favour. I strongly object to your deceptive business conduct and ask you to reimburse the unlawfully charged difference created by your fantasy exchange rate. Yours faithfully, Kathrin Meyer
Hello,
we are neither Bank nor provider of any ATM. No matter which ATM have you used. The ex-rate + any charges are always determined directly by your bank. So I would recommend you to contact your bank. Definitely 24,9 is very bad rate. However 27,3 is more like middle rate. So the fair rate for selling cash CZK would be around 26-26,5. The rest difference of more than 1 CZK can be explained as bad conditions of your bank.
